Mr Kevin Liston
Kevin Liston has been the Director of ARA for the past 25 years.
He has a wealth current on the ground knowledge embedded within a full understanding of the historical contexts and different groups of refugees who have made Australia home.
On a national level Kevin’s work in policy development as both a Member of the Refugee Resettlement Advisory Council for the Minister for Immigration, and Citizenship and as a Board Member for the Refugee Council of Australia, means he can articulate the advances and concerns that ARA and the refugee sector at large have about refugee and migration policy.
Kevin is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable authorities on refugee issues in South Australia.
Since 1983, he has worked with every wave of refugees, including those from Vietnam, Chile, El Salvador, former Yugoslavia, the Middle East and Africa. He was deeply involved in helping asylum seekers (boat people) form Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Kevin is also the non-executive Director (Board Member) of ARA Jobs Pty Ltd, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Australian Refugee Association Inc. and a Job Network Provider. ARA Jobs has the only specialist contract for Non- English Speaking Backgrounds (NESB) job-seekers in the state.
Before migrating to Australia in 1982 Kevin studied and worked in Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Kenya and USA. He is from a bilingual background in Ireland and is a gifted speaker. He acquired his academic qualifications in a Bachelor of Philosophy (BPh) at the Lateran University in Rome, Italy (1965).
