Art gallery
Art is a highly effective means of expression and communication, particularly where language breaks down. Art can also be a source of social criticism and a force of transformation. ARA receives many requests to source art by refugees and asylum seekers.
If you are an artist from a refugee or similar background, and would like to promote your work by having an exhibition in our foyer or by allowing ARA to refer potential buyers or exhibition organisers to you, please contact the promotions manager at ARA.
Other paintings, many by children from refugee backgrounds, line the walls of ARA’s offices. Viewings are most welcome.
Shafiq Monis
ARA exhibited the paintings of Shafiq Monis in the reception area in 2005.
One of Shafiq’s painting called Freedom has been kindly purchased and dontated to ARA by Heart Of Australia and is permanently on display in reception.
Shafiq Monis is from the Hazara tribe in Afganistan. He had a carpet business in Kabul where he lived with his wife and two small children until the Taliban destroyed his art and business and imprisoned him for a year. During this time he was tortured. When he was finally released from prison, he discovered his family had vanished. Following his desperate search for his family, he began his journey to Australia.
After nine difficult days and nights in a small boat, Shafiq arrived in Australia. He was sent to Woomera Detention Centre, where he spent 10 months. Shafiq spent much of his time in detention painting, where he finally felt the freedom to be an artist. He was first prize winner in two exhibitions held in the detention centre. He describes his work:
My art is my way of therapy. I feel that my life has been nothing but suffering until now. Here in Austral;ia, I have been pleased with having the freedom to express myself. For the first time in my life, I have received the gift of the freedom of speech. Even if it lasts one minute, there is nothing greater than that.
Since his release, Shafiq has continued to paint and has exhibited in a number of exhibitions around Australia, including Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria.
Other works by Shafiq Monis are for sale. For further details contact Angelika Tyrone on 040001 9531
