School Workshops
ARA has a grant from UnitingCare Wesley to provide free workshops for school staff and volunteers in the Adelaide metropolitan area – before December 2008.
The workshops are designed to…
• increase awareness and understanding of children from refugee and
Culturally and Linguistically Diverse [CALD] backgrounds at schools,
• increase the effectiveness of education for children from refugee
backgrounds,
• promote a happy and healthy school environment – for the students and the
staff,
• increase opportunities to engage with the families of the children,
• remember that there is diversity within other cultures, as there is within
your own,
• embrace culture and enjoy it,
• enjoy your role at the school.
The format generally includes:
Introduction - Refugee and migration trends, interactive activities; Culture workshop; Cultural Competency; Country Profiles - People from two countries, for example Sudan and Afghanistan; describing their country, culture, language, religion, traditions, beliefs, family relationships and education systems; and a break with ‘Cultural’ Nibbles.
